The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services announced on Mar. 31 that April will be observed as Strengthening Families Month, a statewide initiative focused on promoting child safety and abuse prevention.
The campaign is highlighted by the display of hundreds of blue pinwheels in Helena and throughout Montana, serving as a symbol for child abuse prevention and reminding communities of the importance of providing safe environments for children. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the need for strong family support systems.
Officials from the Montana Children’s Trust Fund, part of the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), will join Blue Cross Blue Shield at Shodair Children’s Hospital on April 3 at 1 p.m. for a community event launching the month-long effort. “Parenting isn’t easy, but we want Montanans to know they aren’t alone,” says MacKenzie Forbis of the Montana Children’s Trust Fund. “Strong communities support strong families, and there is no shame in reaching out for help. We all need it from time to time.”
The Children’s Trust Fund is distributing over 12,000 pinwheels to schools, libraries, non-profits, and local public health departments this year. More than 71 organizations are hosting events such as community pinwheel plantings, family carnivals, scavenger hunts, and educational workshops throughout April. “It’s fitting for us to host the pinwheel planting kick-off as Shodair Children’s Hospital has served as a safe place for children and families across Montana for 130 years,” Shodair CEO Craig Aasved said. “We are always looking for ways to have community engagement on our campus, and look forward to seeing blue pinwheels throughout the month.” Details about local events can be found through the DPHHS Prevention Month website.
According to the official website, the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services advances conditions for healthy living by empowering individuals through evidence-based programs across communities statewide. The department also oversees facilities such as the Montana State Hospital and veterans’ homes dedicated to specialized care needs.
Additionally, the department works with an executive team focused on strategic oversight, aiming to enhance health, safety, well-being and independence among Montanans through integrated services. These supports extend statewide, reaching both mountain regions and plains.Building healthier communities relies on partnerships with local governments as well as tribal groups.
Looking ahead, organizers hope that continued visibility during Strengthening Families Month will encourage more families across Montana to seek support when needed.
