U.S. Senator Steve Daines recently visited Sibayne-Stillwater’s Columbus metallurgical complex, where he met with miners and toured the facility. During his visit, Daines spoke with Fox Business about President Trump’s new anti-dumping duty aimed at preventing Russian palladium from entering American markets, a move he says will help protect mining jobs in Montana.

Fox Business correspondent Grady Trimble explained that the Department of Commerce has set a preliminary tariff of approximately 133 percent on palladium imports from Russia. This measure has effectively halted Russian exports to the United States and led to a recovery in palladium prices, which is seen as beneficial for the company operating the facility.

Trimble stated: “The Department of Commerce just implemented a preliminary tariff of around 133 percent on palladium from Russia.  Russia’s imports [exports] to the U.S. have effectively stopped because of that and now the price of the precious metal has since recovered to levels that are sustainable for the company.  Senator Steve Daines is here on the ground here at this facility where they process the palladium and he says that this is all a result of the Trump administration stepping in and stopping Russia from dumping palladium on the market.”

Senator Daines commented: “We were pursuing this case with the Biden Administration. They were not receptive, they were stalling it. And once the election happened President Trump becomes out president and he puts people in place like Doug Bergum, Chris Wright, and Howard Lutnick. Folks who are going to be on the side of American jobs and American mining. It is absolutely night and day.”

Daines grew up in Bozeman, Montana, attended public schools there as a fifth-generation Montanan, and earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Montana State University (https://www.daines.senate.gov/). He represents Montana in the U.S. Senate (https://www.daines.senate.gov/) and engages in public service through constituent assistance as well as committee work (https://www.daines.senate.gov/).
