The Montana Board of Regents announced on Apr. 14 that Dr. Jeremiah Shinn has been selected as the next president of the University of Montana, following a national search with over 70 applicants.

Shinn’s appointment is significant for the university community, as it marks a new chapter in leadership for an institution that serves more than 11,000 students and offers both in-person and online educational opportunities according to the official website of the University of Montana.

“I am honored to be named the 20th president of the University of Montana and eager to get started,” said Shinn. “I am inspired by the remarkable students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members who make UM so special, and I look forward to joining this extraordinary team to build on its strong foundation and shape a bright future together.”

Montana Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian said, “Dr. Shinn’s on-campus visit affirmed our belief that he is an exceptional candidate who, throughout the search process, repeatedly rose to the top of an outstanding and diverse field of applicants. His demonstrated leadership, commitment to student success and collaborative spirit make him uniquely suited to lead the University of Montana.” The selection process was led by Christian with support from a presidential search advisory work group and AGB Search. The board described it as expedited yet comprehensive.

Board Chair Todd Buchanan said about Shinn: “Dr. Shinn brings not only experience and insight, but also a clear respect for the University of Montana’s role in the life of our state. His approachable leadership style and clear vision for supporting student success resonated throughout his visit, and we’re excited to welcome him to the University of Montana.”

Shinn currently serves as interim president at Boise State University where he has worked on initiatives related to student engagement and campus partnerships. Previously he held roles at Louisiana State University as vice president for student affairs.

According to its official website, the University operates within higher education as a public research university, emphasizing academic excellence alongside hands-on learning in an inclusive environment set against picturesque surroundings. It provides undergraduate through professional degree programs via established admissions processes according to its website.

Shinn will begin his term at UM on July 1.
