The Montana Department of Commerce introduced a grant funding program that will allow communities to preserve and protect their historic downtown with applications being accepted beginning Tuesday, Dec. 8.
“Montana’s main streets are vital to the strength and resiliency of our local economies,” Jennifer Olson, Montana Department of Commerce Community Development Division administrator said on the state’s website at Montana.gov. “These grants will help Montana communities restore healthy community districts and preserve the historic structures that make Montana the special place we all know and treasure.”
The report said the goal of the program is to preserve historically important buildings through economic development, urban restoration and historic preservation using planning and organization, design skills and promotion.
The program will also offer guidance, technical support and assistance for an estimated 34 Montana communities.
The grants will be awarded to those whose proposals are the most competitive.
The money can be used for planning or building efforts that impact directly historic preservation, downtown revitalization and economic development, the report said.
