HELENA, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte on June 14 announced his support for the bipartisan Fort Belknap Indian Community (FBIC) Water Settlement Act, introduced on June 14 by U.S. Senators Steve Daines and Jon Tester.
“This bipartisan bill is the result of extensive coordination between the State of Montana, the Fort Belknap Indian Community, and the federal government, with valuable input from local leaders, farmers, ranchers, and other water users over many years,” Gov. Gianforte said. “It’s time we get this done for the benefit of the tribes, our farmers and ranchers, and all water users in northcentral Montana.”
In a letter to Senators Daines and Tester, the governor requested the State of Montana continue to have a voice at the table as the bill moves through the legislative process.
In addition to support from the governor, the senators’ bill is also supported by FBIC Tribal Council President Jeff Stiffarm and U.S. Representatives Ryan Zinke and Matt Rosendale.
