Montana Heritage Center receives $57.3 Million in private donations for expansion
In a significant move for Montana's historical and educational sectors, Governor Greg Gianforte, alongside Montana Historical Society (MTHS) Director Molly Kruckenberg, announced that the state has secured $57.3 million in private donations on October 3, 2023.
"Our shared vision for a world-class Montana Heritage Center is coming to fruition," said Governor Gianforte.
The announcement was followed by the introduction of a new endowment campaign. This campaign aims to ensure that every Montana student has the opportunity to visit the upgraded Montana Heritage Center as well as the renovated State Capitol in Helena.
“The first lady and I are overwhelmed by the generosity of Montanans and friends of our state. We're thrilled to launch the Montana History & Civics Education Endowment, enabling every Montana child to delve deep into our state’s rich history,” said Greg Gianforte.
According to the press release, during the ceremony, the Governor acknowledged the contributions of some major donors. Norm Asbjornson's significant donation of $10.4 million was highlighted, alongside BNSF Railway’s $5 million commitment. Other noteworthy donors included the Arthur M. Blank Foundation and Barrick Gold Corporation.
The endowment's primary objective is to offer grants to students. These grants will cover the costs of their visits to the Heritage Center, and MTHS staff will aid in organizing these educational excursions. Kruckenberg emphasized the importance of these tours, noting that they "will improve students’ understanding of civics, connect them to their heritage, and inspire them to be tomorrow’s stewards.”
Moreover, the students' itinerary will encompass other cultural and historical landmarks as they journey to Helena. Of particular note is the considerable donation from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation – a staggering $1 million for the endowment and a record-breaking $25 million towards the Montana Heritage Center's construction.
