NFIB's latest Jobs Report indicates that over a third of small business owners are still struggling to fill open positions. The issue is particularly prevalent in the transportation, construction, and manufacturing sectors, while agriculture and finance are less affected.

The report reveals that 35% of small business owners reported unfilled job openings in January, consistent with December's figures. Ronda Wiggers, NFIB's state director for Montana, commented on local efforts to address this challenge. "Here in Montana, we’re pushing for passage of a couple of measures that will alleviate some of the problems small businesses are having with finding help," she stated. She referred to House Bill 131, which aims to reduce unemployment duration, and House Bill 197, designed to expedite the return-to-work process for injured workers. "Should both bills pass, together they can provide more than a little help in filling job openings," Wiggers added.

Bill Dunkelberg, NFIB Chief Economist, noted that while small business owners are optimistic about economic trends, employment remains a significant concern due to difficulties in finding qualified employees.

The report highlights several key points: 52% of small business owners were hiring or attempting to hire in January—a decrease from December; 47% reported few or no qualified applicants; and there was a slight decline in plans to create new jobs over the next three months. Additionally, labor quality concerns decreased slightly as did labor cost issues.

A net 33% of small business owners increased compensation in January—a rise from December—while plans to raise compensation within the next three months saw a slight decrease.

NFIB has been advocating for small businesses across the United States for over 80 years. More information can be found on their website or by following their social media channels.
