City of Livingston issued the following announcement.
The Livingston Parks & Trails Committee invites residents to comment on its draft Policy for Naming Livingston Parks, Trails and Recreation Facilities.
The draft policy establishes a uniform procedure for the official naming and renaming of the City’s parks, open space, trails and recreation facilities to ensure they are easily identified and located and given names that are consistent with the character of the area and community served.
“We have no immediate plans at this time to rename any existing parks, trails or other facilities,” said Jeanne-Marie Souvigney, chair of the Livingston Parks & Trails Committee.
“The City Commission asked us to develop this policy after a proposal was made to rename the O Street Connector, and we realized the City doesn’t have a formal naming policy in place,” she said. “This is the first step. The next step would be to review the current trail system and consider
consolidating names to reduce confusion and encourage trail networking in the future.”
The draft policy provides direction for making nominations, the naming process, criteria for naming and renaming procedures as well as signage.
“We drew heavily from existing naming policies in other Montana communities,” said Souvigney, “and adjusted this policy to fit Livingston.”
The draft policy can be viewed at the Committee’s web site at http://www.livingstonmontana.org/living/city_commission/parks_and_trails_committee. Residents are encouraged to offer comments via email at cityparkstrails@livingstonmontana.org through October 27 or at the Committee’s September 23 or October 28 meetings. The Committee’s meetings are currently being conducted via Zoom video conferencing. The Committee expects to take action on the policy at its October 28 meeting; its recommendation will then go to the City Commission for consideration.
The Parks & Trails Committee meets the fourth Wednesday of every month at 6 pm. During COVID- 19 restrictions, its meetings are being held via Zoom video conferencing. Its next meeting is Wednesday, September 23.
