The Madison County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to hospitals and other healthcare facilities to be on the alert for phone calls from someone claiming to work with Walgreens.
Madison County's Communication Center says that doctors' offices and hospitals may be receiving calls from someone pretending to work with Walgreens and demanding confidential patient information.
"The Madison County Communication Center has received reports that medical practices and hospital facilities may be getting calls from someone identifying themselves as employees of Walgreen's and asking for private patient records," the Madison County Sheriff's Office in Montana wrote on their Facebook page.
The Sheriff's Office strongly suggested ignoring the call. The notice is also addressed to the public.
"While this seems to be targeted specifically to medical facilities, we would like everyone to remain observant when answering phone calls regarding your personal medical and financial information," the advisory stated. "If you have any doubts, hang up and call that bank, pharmacy, or hospital back, and then report the call to the Sheriff's Office."
Employees were advised to use caution while answering the phone and report any similar or suspicious calls.
“Staff at both hospitals are aware of the potential scam and are committed to maintaining your security and privacy. Be safe everyone!”
Caller ID Reputation reported that "Scammers look for opportunities to take advantage of trust and importance. If you manage a hospital, doctor's office, or health insurance provider, there's a chance that someone will spoof your number so they can reach unsuspecting consumers."
