The total economic impact of film production in Montana from July 2020-June 2022 is estimated to be $153.9 million, supporting 839 FTEs with $41.5 million paid in employee compensation in Montana. This is due in part to the $12 million media tax credit passed in 2019.

Tax credits are part of doing business in the film (media manufacturing) industry, and currently, Montana is 41st nationwide up against 37 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. To attract productions over $10 million, and to cultivate the foundation needed to ensure a sustainable film industry, the cap must be raised. Currently there is legislation proposed to make it $30 million, which is not enough to grow the industry, so this conversation will continue post-Transmittal.
