The Colt Fire, which is believed to have been sparked by a lightning strike, continues its relentless spread across Missoula County, Mont., posing significant challenges to firefighting efforts. A Wednesday update from the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) reported that the blaze has engulfed an estimated 4,390 acres.

"Please be aware that due to the possibility of rapidly changing conditions, an Evacuation Order may be issued with no prior notice or warning," the update said, which was posted on Facebook. "Home and property owners should remain vigilant and have a comprehensive evacuation plan for family, pets, and livestock, along with staying informed through emergency alerts at Smart911.com and understanding the Missoula County evacuation process and what an order and warning means."

The DNRC has been continually working to combat the fire and protect communities in the area, the update said. Crews have been strategically deployed to different sections of the fire to contain its advancement. On the east side, efforts are focused on containing spot fires east of Forest Road 646 (Colt/Uhler Road). On the south side, crews are actively seeking opportunities to establish a direct fire line along the West Fork of the Clearwater River, with the fire's edge being held just north of the river. On the north side, crews and equipment are working to reduce vegetation along Forest Road 906 (Beaver Creek Road) and exploring potential locations for constructing fire lines to effectively contain the fire.

As part of the firefighting efforts, the Structure Protection group has been carrying out numerous structure assessments to safeguard properties around Highway 83 and the lakes south and east of the fire, the update said. Creating defensible space by cutting vegetation and setting up pumps, hoses and sprinklers are among the measures taken to protect structures from the advancing flames.

Authorities have implemented a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the affected area, the update said. The TFR has been enforced to ensure the safety of firefighting aircraft operating in the vicinity of the fire. This temporary measure aims to create a safe and controlled airspace for aerial firefighting efforts. Pilots and drone operators are strictly prohibited from entering the restricted airspace until the TFR is lifted.

As the Colt Fire continues to test firefighting resources, low humidity, warm weather and increasing winds from the west threaten to worsen the situation, the update said. Authorities are urging residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and heed any evacuation orders for their safety.
