Bozeman and Missoula, Mont. (February 7, 2023) - A recent report released by the Headwaters Foundation and the Montana Healthcare Foundation sheds light on the positive impact of Montana's Medicaid expansion program on the state's economy and healthcare access.
Brenda Solorzano, CEO of the Headwaters Foundation, highlighted the findings, stating, "Montana’s approach to Medicaid expansion is working and remains a crucial support to people working in health care, childcare, and other direct service industries that keep Montana’s economy humming."
Dr. Aaron Wernham, CEO of the Montana Healthcare Foundation, emphasized the ongoing benefits of the program, noting, "Medicaid expansion continues to benefit the state by providing health insurance to over 100,000 Montanans while supporting a strong economy."
The report outlined key findings, including the significant health and economic benefits generated by Medicaid expansion at a minimal cost to the state. The state's 10% share of costs, amounting to roughly $100 million per year, is offset by reduced spending on other Medicaid programs, state-funded health services for the uninsured, and budget savings attributed to expansion.
Furthermore, the report highlighted that Medicaid expansion has led to a 45% decrease in the rate of un-insurance statewide since its implementation. This decrease has facilitated access to essential health services, reduced medical debt, and prevented bankruptcies for many Montanans.
Notably, the Medicaid expansion program has provided coverage to nearly 300,000 low-income Montanans, enabling access to both physical and behavioral health care. In 2022, approximately 115,000 Montanans were covered by the expansion, showcasing its significant reach and impact.
The economic benefits of the program were underscored by the generation of roughly $51 million in revenue related to the estimated $475 million in personal income generated by Medicaid expansion. Additionally, 96% of Montana's adult Medicaid population either work or report reasonable impediments to work, highlighting the program's support for individuals in various occupations essential to the economy.
The report, titled "Economic Effects of Medicaid Expansion in Montana," was produced by Bryce Ward of ABMJ Consulting and commissioned by the Montana Healthcare Foundation and Headwaters Foundation.
