Earlier this month, the Montana Wildlife Federation (MWF) addressed a letter to the state's federal delegation, expressing significant concern for federal workers who provide essential services in wildlife management, habitat conservation, and public access. The letter highlights the termination of thousands of federal workers from various agencies, including the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management. These terminations have affected those supporting farmers, ranchers, veterans, tribes, and rural communities.
The judiciary has intervened in several cases to prevent further erosion of laws and protection of the respected federal workforce. Conservation projects in Montana have been adversely affected by the current administration's freezing of federal funding—a move contrary to congressional acts. Governor Greg Gianforte responded with a statewide temporary stop-work order through the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.
MWF urges Montana’s federal legislators to act decisively to protect scientific integrity and ensure Congressional oversight. As of February 17th—President’s Day—only Senator Steve Daines has responded to MWF's appeal.
MWF outlined four key requests for Congressional representatives:
1. Reaffirm the Importance of the Merit System
2. Defend the Impartiality of Public Service
3. Promote a Positive Work Environment
4. Conduct Appropriate Oversight
The organization has shared its letter and Senator Daines' response while awaiting replies from Senator Sheehy and Representatives Zinke and Downing.
Jeff Lukas serves as MWF's Conservation Director. A lifelong conservationist engaged in hunting and fishing activities across Montana's landscapes, Lukas is dedicated to introducing more people to outdoor pursuits while advocating for wildlife conservation efforts.
