Submissions are now open for the 2025 Montana Law Enforcement Appreciation Poster Contest, as announced by Attorney General Austin Knudsen. The contest invites elementary school students across Montana to submit artwork that demonstrates their appreciation for law enforcement officers.
This annual event is a collaboration between the Attorney General’s Office, Montana Highway Patrol (MHP), and Stockman Bank. It aims to promote public service and showcase respect and gratitude towards law enforcement while allowing children to display their artistic talents.
Attorney General Austin Knudsen expressed the importance of the contest, stating, “This contest is a great way for Montana’s elementary school students to show their respect and appreciation for law enforcement officers across the state. In Montana, we back the blue and it’s important to instill that principle in children at a young age. That’s why we started this contest.” He encouraged all eligible students to participate.
MHP Colonel Kurt Sager added, “At the Highway Patrol, we look forward to working with Attorney General Knudsen on this poster contest every year. It’s a great opportunity for us to connect with students on what it means to us to be a law enforcement officer. The showing of support also means a lot to our troopers.”
Bill Coffee, CEO of Stockman Bank, remarked on the bank's involvement: “We are excited to be a part of this program recognizing the work of law enforcement across our state and giving our youth the opportunity to share their creativity.”
Winners will be selected from each of the seven MHP districts, with each class receiving $250 from Stockman Bank and an ice cream social hosted by MHP troopers. A statewide winner will receive an additional $500 from Stockman Bank along with a visit from Attorney General Austin Knudsen and an opportunity for a ride-along with MHP Colonel Kurt Sager. The winning poster will also be displayed in Montana Department of Justice offices throughout the state.
The rules specify that applicants must be in elementary school and that their artwork should express appreciation for law enforcement without digital production methods. Acceptable media include acrylics, watercolor, pencils, charcoal, markers, crayons, pastels, or similar materials. Posters should preferably measure 8.5 x 14 inches but can also be submitted in sizes 8.5 x 11 or 11 x 17 inches.
Submissions must include original artwork along with a brief biography and completed application forms sent to the Attorney General’s Office at 215 N. Sanders, Helena, MT 59601.
