MSU Billings 9/11 Memorial Scholarship awarded to criminal justice students

Two City College at Montana State University Billings students were awarded the 9/11 Memorial Scholarship at the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony earlier this month.

The original 9/11 Memorial Scholarship began as two endowed scholarships that were awarded on an annual basis through the MSUB Foundation and rotated each year among the paramedicine and fire science programs. The scholarship grew over the years and now currently includes up to three $500 annual scholarships to City College at MSUB students majoring in Criminal Justice, Fire Science, or Paramedicine.

Students apply for the scholarship award through the Center for Engagement and must express their education and career goals, work experience within their major, volunteer and service experience, and potential financial impact of receiving the award. The scholarship selection committee reviews the applications with the Civic Engagement Coordinator, Director of the Center for Engagement, and Dean of Student Engagement to select scholarship recipients. For the 2022-2023 academic year, students were selected based on faculty nomination, due to the COVID-19 pandemic postponing application retrieval.

2022 9/11 Memorial Scholarship recipients

Nikita Erickson, Criminal Justice major

Nikita was born and raised in Three Forks, Mont. She is a third-year criminal justice major and currently works as a correctional officer at the Women’s Prison in Billings. Her goal after graduation is to work as a deputy for a few years and then possibly become a detective. Her ultimate goal would be to work as a child trafficking and humanization agent with the FBI. “I am glad to have received this scholarship as it will help alleviate some of the financial stress that paying for college entails,” she said. “This scholarship will allow me to focus more on my studies instead of having to work overtime shifts to help pay for college.”

Gabriel Wiese, Criminal Justice major

Gabriel was born in San Diego, Calif. He is a senior studying criminal justice. After graduation he plans to pursue a career in law enforcement with an ultimate career goal of becoming a U.S. Marshall. Wiese expresses his gratitude for the scholarship as it will help reduce the financial stress of college. “This scholarship will help me pursue my career goals without having to worry as much about paying for college along the way.”
