After a number of thefts from vehicles, the Bozeman Police are asking for the public's help to find a suspect.

"Officers are seeking help from the public in identifying suspects in a series of thefts from vehicles," the Bozeman Police Department announced on Facebook. "If you live in the Lakes at Valley West subdivision in Bozeman and have external security cameras, you may be able to help out. Officers have been investigating a series of thefts from unlocked vehicles parked in the northwest residential area of Bozeman. If you have an external security camera and are willing, please search between midnight and 0600 on 6/4/23 for people checking car doors in your neighborhood."

The police said thieves often have a nearby vehicle for a quick getaway. Officers are requesting from residents that if they "have a video of individuals engaging in this behavior, please get in touch with Officer N Patrick (#105) at npatrick@bozeman.net."

"In the meantime, the majority of thefts from vehicles that officers investigate involve unlocked vehicles," the police added. "The best way to protect your property is to secure it and lock your car."

The police have previously advised car owners to lock their vehicles and keep anything of value out of sight when leaving and parking their cars.

One notable uptick in vehicle break-ins was at the beginning of summer 2021 when thefts happened "in neighborhoods or in parking lots around the downtown area," Wake Up Montana reported.

The Bozeman Police Department believes in the importance of service and teamwork. It is committed to making Bozeman the "most livable place through public safety and community partnerships."

Further information about the Bozeman Police Department can be found on their official website, including a message from Chief Jim Veltkamp. Veltkamp was named Bozeman’s new police chief in March 2021 after serving in an interim capacity since former Chief Steve Crawford left the position in September 2020 to become the next Bureau Chief of the Narcotics Bureau.
