Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen has prohibited the use of DeepSeek, a China-based artificial intelligence platform, on all devices within the Montana Department of Justice (MTDOJ). The decision was made due to concerns that the platform poses significant security risks by potentially making user information accessible to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
In a communication to MTDOJ employees, Knudsen highlighted the security threats associated with DeepSeek. He noted that the program stores data on servers located in China and contains hidden code capable of transmitting user data directly to the Chinese government. Additionally, users might unknowingly create accounts in China, exposing their identities and online activities to the CCP.
“As Attorney General my primary responsibility is the safety and security of Montanans. That begins with protecting law enforcement from data breaches and foreign espionage,” stated Attorney General Knudsen. “Accordingly, use of DeepSeek on any MTDOJ device, including but not limited to cell phones, laptops, tablets, and desktop computers is prohibited, effective immediately.”
The ban follows similar actions taken by other countries. DeepSeek has already been blocked on government devices in Canada, Australia, South Korea, and Taiwan. Italy has implemented a nationwide block of the program. The platform is also associated with China Mobile, which has connections to the Chinese military and has faced sanctions from the U.S. government.
Attorney General Knudsen remains dedicated to safeguarding Montanans from surveillance efforts by the CCP through technology. His office played a role in drafting legislation that banned TikTok in Montana during 2023. In December of that year, he led an effort urging the Supreme Court to maintain a national ban on TikTok.
