Gov. Greg Gianforte recently reconvened Montana's Housing Task Force in Helena.

The move follows what has been a momentous legislative period focused on pro-housing reforms in the state, according to a recent press release from the state of Montana website.

Gianforte commended the bipartisan task force for its groundbreaking proposals aimed at boosting the availability of affordable housing in Montana. He also urged the group to continue its work in presenting further recommendations.

"There's more work to do to bring the American dream of homeownership into greater reach for Montanans, and I look forward to the innovative ideas and continued leadership of our task force members," said Gianforte in the release.

Chaired by Department of Environmental Quality Director Chris Dorrington, the Housing Task Force is composed of state agency leaders, lawmakers, local officials, association representatives, economists, researchers, and advocates. The governor initially launched this task force in July 2022 and received two key reports last year. According to the press release, these reports highlighted the core issues contributing to Montana's housing shortage and offered actionable solutions that could be enacted either administratively or through legislative amendments.

According to the official statement released, the task force's insights proved pivotal in shaping the state's legislative agenda on housing for 2023, which led to numerous reforms. These reforms, collectively referred to as the "Montana Miracle" by some, included revamping housing mandates, amending zoning laws, promoting the construction of denser housing units, simplifying subdivision reviews, and investing in workforce skill development.

Gianforte extended the tenure of the Housing Task Force through 2025 this past June. Addressing the group, he summarized the accomplishments achieved so far and emphasized the need for sustained efforts.

"Just as I did last year, I ask you again to dig deep, identify the problems, and leave no stone unturned. Thank you again for your commitment to this task force and to serving the people of Montana," Gianforte concluded.

The reconvening of the Housing Task Force demonstrates the ongoing commitment of Montana's government to address the housing shortage in the state. With the innovative ideas and continued leadership of its members, the task force aims to bring the dream of homeownership within reach for more Montanans.
