Bozeman, Mont. (January 31, 2024) – The Montana Healthcare Foundation has revealed an initial round of funding amounting to $1.8 million for nine projects aimed at addressing local food and affordable housing needs across the state. Dr. Aaron Wernham, CEO of the Montana Healthcare Foundation, emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing these essential needs, stating, "Communities understand their needs best."
The funding is part of the foundation's new Healthy Montana Communities Initiative, which focuses on supporting community health by tackling issues such as food insecurity and housing challenges. Dr. Wernham highlighted the foundation's commitment to creating and preserving safe, affordable homes, improving access to nutritious foods, and developing resilient local solutions to enhance community health and well-being. He noted that rural communities are a primary focus due to the unique challenges they face.
The Healthy Montana Communities Initiative, supported in part by a generous donation from Mackenzie Scott, aims to provide grants, technical assistance, and low-interest loans to assist communities in planning and implementing economically viable housing and food system projects. The foundation prioritizes collaborative efforts that bring partners together to design and execute new projects. Dr. Wernham clarified that all funding is by invitation only, with unsolicited proposals not being accepted.
Among the recipients of the first round of funding are organizations such as the Community Food & Agriculture Coalition, the Montana Partnership to End Childhood Hunger, Hopa Mountain, and the Montana Cooperative Development Center for food system projects. Housing initiatives supported include the Red Lodge Area Community Foundation, West Yellowstone Foundation, and One Health in Hardin. Additionally, organizations like United Housing Partners, Mitchell Court, and Homeward received low-interest loans for housing developments.
The Healthy Montana Communities Initiative is a significant step towards addressing key health-related needs in communities across Montana. More information about the initiative and its impact can be found on the foundation's website.
