The University of Providence’s Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program (BSN) offers high school graduates the opportunity to explore the many benefits of campus life while earning their bachelor’s degree in nursing. Our four-year, on-campus nursing program is designed to prepare students for a rewarding career in nursing by immersing students in a didactic learning experience.

A two-year liberal arts education pairs with foundational nursing courses, specialized nursing clinicals, and enhanced skills training to best prepare graduating students to meet the needs of the rapidly evolving, high-paced world of nursing. Students will graduate ready to take on the challenges of nursing and serve as leaders in their workplaces and quality caregivers to the patients they serve.

Live & Learn On Campus

Among the many highlights of the traditional BSN program is the opportunity for students to earn their BSN through on-campus learning. In addition, the traditional BSN is the first in UP’s School of Health Professions lineup to offer learning and boarding exclusively on our Great Falls campus – opening new doors to exciting individual, community, and campus partnerships that will advance student opportunity.

Students in the traditional BSN program will be exposed to a unique, didactic curriculum – where they’ll experience the complete immersion and benefit of in-person lectures, labs, clinical placements, and nursing simulation. In addition, traditional BSN students will forge new connections with nursing and non-nursing students and faculty, building lasting partnerships and friendships beyond academics.

Foundational & Practical Curriculum

The traditional BSN program combines two years of foundational liberal arts courses with two years of advanced nursing courses designed to maximize learning outcomes and build well-rounded students who can best serve their patients and fellow nurses. Traditional BSN students will enroll in two semesters per year (fall and spring), taking between four to six courses per semester. During their final two years of nursing courses, students will also take didactic and clinical credits applied toward their degree.

Real Nursing Experiences

Thanks to a generous donation from the Vander Werff family, traditional BSN students will have access to a brand-new, state-of-the-art nursing simulation facility located on UP’s Great Falls campus. This facility will include newly designed lecture halls, quiet study areas, and a fully operational nursing simulation lab that will allow students to gain valuable hands-on experience in industry-required skills.

Students will learn crucial, in-demand clinical and administrative skills required of today’s nurses from our dedicated nursing faculty and clinical instructors. Our traditional BSN curriculum is specifically designed to prepare students to enter the workforce as registered nurses with the skills to perform various tasks across different job responsibilities a registered nurse may face. Students will learn everything from nursing fundamentals to specialties across pediatrics, OB, psychiatric, hospice, and palliative care.

Two Educational Paths – One Degree

There are two pathways for students to enroll in the traditional BSN program – providing more students the opportunity to enroll in nursing school and start toward a rewarding career in nursing.

Direct Entry

All applicants seeking to enroll in UP’s traditional BSN program will first apply as direct entry applicants. However, since direct-entry admission requires students to meet specific academic criteria, not every student who applies as a direct-entry student will be accepted.

If a student is accepted under direct entry admission, their spot in our nursing program is reserved as a freshman – guaranteeing them an open seat when they begin taking nursing courses. Check out our website to learn more about direct-entry requirements and priority deadlines.

Pre-Nursing

Although a student may be bumped from direct entry admission, they can still qualify for entry into the traditional BSN program at a later date. Students can seek admission into UP under a different major before being invited to re-enroll in the traditional BSN program.

The pre-nursing admission pathway allows students interested in nursing to learn more about the career through personalized advising from nursing faculty and nursing opportunities made available by the nursing program. Pre-nursing admission is ideal for currently enrolled first, and second-year students who do not meet direct entry admission requirements but are considering nursing as a career. Opening New Opportunities

Graduates of the traditional BSN program will enter the workforce as competent, lifelong learners ready to apply their skills as caregivers to those in need. UP’s traditional BSN program will not only prepare graduates by teaching them the most in-demand clinical and administrative nursing skills available but set forth a robust educational foundation they will carry with them wherever their future leads.

Continuing Education

Graduating with a BSN is the first step for those who wish to pursue advanced degrees in the nursing field. While several nursing careers are available to registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree, career opportunities such as nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nurse administrators, and more require a master’s degree in nursing. The traditional BSN program graduates will have a strong foundation of knowledge to pursue their MSN if they choose.

Career Advancement

With a bachelor of science in nursing, students graduate ready to take on the challenges of a rapidly evolving nursing landscape. Students will graduate from our program with the skills to perform as registered nurses and step into leadership roles within nursing – providing guidance and support to their fellow nurses and patients.
