Republican incumbent Steve Daines has been re-elected to the U.S. Senate for a second term.
“The voice of Montana has been heard loud and clear,” Daines said Wednesday in a video posted on NBC Montana’s Facebook page. “By winning this race tonight we have saved the U.S. Senate from Chuck Schumer.”
Daines defeated Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock in the Montana Senate race. Missoula Current reports Daines obtained approximately 55% of the vote compared to 45% for Bullock.
The campaigns for both candidates were the most expensive in the history of the state with Daines, Bullock and outside groups spending more than $150 million, according to Missoula Current.
“The TV ads will stop,” Daines said in the video. “Your mailboxes will be free again. And then it’s time to get together and come together as Montanans and as Americans to work to address the challenges we face.”
In the video, Daines said he would focus on the same things he has been focused on the past six years which includes creating more high-paying jobs, standing up for veterans, defending Second Amendment rights and protecting access to public lands.
